Dental FillingAt some point in your life, you will likely need a filling in a tooth. When your dentist tells you that a filling is needed, you should not be too worried as many people need a filling at some point. But what does it really mean to have a filling? Our skilled dental professionals at The Smile Suite at Towne Square will gladly explain the dental treatment and the reason for it. We will also discuss the causes that lead up to the need for a filling and what to expect. You will be put at ease knowing that a filling is very common and should not be stressed over. When A Filling Is NeededAs the dentist is conducting a dental exam, they will examine each tooth and determine the condition of them and note any cavities that are present or any other decay. They will also determine any tooth sensitivity. They will also have X-rays obtained to identify teeth that are in need of a filling. What Takes Place During Your Filling? As you are being prepared for your filling, you can expect to receive anesthesia at the sight of the filling. The dentist may then need to access the tooth by drilling to reach the decay. Another drill will be used to shape the space that will accommodate the filling. If you are receiving a filling that is bonded, then we will utilize acid gel to etch the tooth to create tiny holes within the enamel. The composite filling will then be placed to fill the holes. Once the filling is placed it will become bonded with the tooth so that decay will be decreased underneath. Depending on the type of composite used, your dentist may utilize a light that will cure the resin. The light will be placed several times to ensure curing is adequate. This curing will then help harden the composite filling. Post FillingOnce all fillings are complete and you are resting at home, you may encounter some different sensations stemming from the filling. The sensations will not last long and they are nothing to be concerned about. An example may be sensitivity to cold beverages or the air while breathing. Any sensitivity felt should be gone seven days after the filling. However, when pain is felt following the filling, it may need to be corrected due to the filling being taller than normal. Having a tall filling is also common. If it has been a couple of weeks since your filling and pain is still being experienced, then a trip back to your dentist will be needed. Your dentist will determine the cause of the continued pain. Once the cause is known, they can then determine whether a new filling will be needed or have the tooth desensitized.
